Amaze Auckland Eateries

While in Mumbai I met a sweet as girl kiwi Katie who is from Wellington – and visiting Auckland for a few days in August – so here is my post of my fave inner city eateries. Auckland has an amazing range of cafes, eateries and bars, with the majority of places having realy great service.

A lot of resturants don’t take bookings in the evenings, unless you are with a larger group of people, but this normally works without too much hassle as you can put your name down and have some drinks beforehand.

All areas are reachable by foot if you like walking, or can be accessed via the inner bus loop – which is called the Link. If you can get access to a car I would highly recommend the west coast beaches (approx. 40 mins drive from the city), takapuna across the harbour bridge for shopping and restaurants (approx. 20 mins driving time).

Britomart –

Britomart is my favourite areas of Auckland, as it is full of great eateries and boutique fashion stores. It’s very easy to mooch around here for an afternoon.

The Store – is a great brunch and lunch spot. Really lovely staff and great coffee, I worked in Britomart last year and visited here most days! The filled rolls are so delish.

Cafe Hanoi – is a delicious Vietnamese resturant. Such great food and a really light and breezy fit-out. One of my faves in the whole of Auckland.

Xuxu – is possibly the world’s cutest dumpling & cocktail bar. With casual booth seats and mosiac tiles, it’s so comfortable but cool. It is a small space so can get busy in the evenings – but this kind of adds to the cuteness. They also play live music which is even cuter!

Federal Street –

Federal Street is a group of resturants that are part of Skycity. I usually head here, take a look round the resturants and decide where to go on the night.

Federal Street Deli – headed up by New Zealand chef-ing legend Al Brown, and is a really fun diner style resturant with amazing food. I would suggest sharing plates if you go with a group of people. I’ve tried most things on the menu and everything was so good

Depot, also owned by Al Brown is really great aswell for lunch and dinner. And Bellotta which is a tapas style resturant is also delish.

Graham Street –
Graham Street has had a large crop up of great cafes, due to new businesses entering this area.

Scratch Bakers – amazing for brunch and breakfast – everything is made from scratch, tehe and so yum – scones, pies and what may be the world’s greatest chicken & beetroot pide. Amazing coffees and really fun, friendly staff. My go-to place when I worked in the area.

Major Sprout – super hip new eatery. One of the barista’s is a babe with a curled up mistache. Lol. Amazing fit-out, smoothies and lunches.

Victoria Street Sushi – sushi in Auckland is AMAZING. This is the one thing I really missed when I lived in Europe. Victoria Street sushi is super freah and amazing, this is in the Spark office building, opposite Les Mills gym : )

City Works Depot –

Best Ugly Bagels – is a really fun casual eatery serving Canadian-style bagels and great coffee. Also headed up by Al Brown. The staff are super friendly.

Brothers Beer – is one of my fave places for a Friday night beverage. With beer’s brewed onsite and a retro lounge feel, it’s really fun.

Wynyard Quarter –

I have been a little dissapointed with the food at Wynyard Quarter, but this is a really nice newer area of Auckland, which is worth a visit as it is lovely along the waterfront. The Conservatory and North Park would be my faves.

Ponsonby –

Ponsonby Road is possibly Auckland’s most famous strip of shops and eateries. Pretty much anywhere on this road is great for eating!

Dizengof – is another Auckland institution for breakfast and lunch. Amazing coffee.

Il Buco – is a pizza hole in the wall. This is my go to in Ponsonby. Great for take-away or grabbing a quick lunch or dinner on the run. Literally ever one of their pizza slices is delish, I have tried them all. Tehehe.

Ponsonby Central – is a must visit. It’s a cluster of great resturants all under one roof, along with a market and cafes. Everywhere here is awesome!

Golden Dawn Tavern of Power – just a few steps from Ponsonby Central this is my favourite night out. Great music, food, drinks and staff. Pretty hipster-ish if you are into that.

Street Food Collective – is another awesome area super close by, with a variety of resturants popping up on rotation, really yum – it’s cool to try something new.

Other great mentions for dinner and drinks are SPQR, Ponsonby Road Bisto and Mekong Baby

Karangahape Road –

Coco’s Cantina – is an amazing Italian resturant run by two kick-ass ladies who are completely into supporting their local community. Really fun, great drink specials and amaze food. Their social media profiles are hilare.

Grey Lynn –

A little further a field, Grey Lynn is a super cool area of town, just past Ponsonby when heading out of the inner city. I would recommend visiting for an afternoon or evening.

Freda’s and The Gypsy Tea Rooms are my faves for drinks and eats. Both are super chilled and have a slightly older crowd which is nice as Ponsonby can sometimes get packed with young cool kids.

Newmarket –

Newmarket is probably Auckland’s most established shopping area. Pretty much everything is here, from boutique shops to chain stores and great cafes. If you bus from the city this is around a 15 min bus ride.

Takapuna –

Hurstmere Green is a resturant development which includes a great bar The Commons and one of my fave resturant chains Mexico. There is also a great cafe Jam, but it can get really busy on the weekends.

The Department Store is a boutique deapartment store, with the best of New Zealanders designer brands, such as Karen Walker, Lonely (lingerie) and I Love Ugly (menswear). An amazing hairsalon Stephen Marr is also in this same building. If you need to get your locks attended to, I would recommend.

I realised half-way through this post that there is a very long list of great places to eat in Auckland! – so this is literally the tip of the iceberg, but can hopefully give you some direction of good places to start with. Enjoy.
